Is SPY a mutual fund or ETF?
For example, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) is a widely utilized exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the S&P 500. First established in January of 1993, SPY was the first index ETF listed in the United States.
Both VFIAX, a mutual fund, and SPY, an ETF, seek to track the S&P 500. The SPY ETF may have a slight tax advantage over the VFIAX mutual fund since it's not actively managed, meaning there's less buying and selling of trades.
SPY was launched in January 1993 and was the very first ETF listed in the U.S.10. Index investing pioneer Vanguard's S&P 500 Index Fund was the first index mutual fund for individual investors.
While they can be actively or passively managed by fund managers, most ETFs are passive investments pegged to the performance of a particular index. Mutual funds come in both active and indexed varieties, but most are actively managed. Active mutual funds are managed by fund managers.
The SPDR S&P 500 ETF is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and trades under the ticker symbol SPY. The SPY's price tracks the S&P 500 index. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF allows investors to track the performance of the US economy without having to buy all the stocks listed on the S&P 500 directly.
The Invesco QQQ ETF is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the Nasdaq 100 Index. Because it passively follows the index, the QQQ share price goes up and down along with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100.
ETFs and mutual funds that track an index typically have lower management fees than actively managed ETFs or mutual funds. A mutual fund is priced once a day and all transactions are executed at that price, while the price of an ETF fluctuates throughout the day as it is bought and sold through an exchange.
ETFs typically have lower expense ratios compared to mutual funds because they're more passively managed. They disclose their holdings daily, allowing investors to see the underlying assets and make informed investment decisions.
Also available as an Admiral™ Shares mutual fund.
Unlike ETFs, mutual funds can offer more specific strategies as well as blends of strategies. Mutual funds offer the same type of indexed investing options as ETFs but also an array of actively and passively managed options that can be fine-tuned to cater to an investor's needs.
What is the downside of ETFs?
However, there are disadvantages of ETFs. They come with fees, can stray from the value of their underlying asset, and (like any investment) come with risks.
Both mutual funds and ETFs offer investors pooled investment product options. Mutual funds have more complex structuring than ETFs with varying share classes and fees. ETFs typically appeal to investors because they track market indexes. Mutual funds appeal because they offer a wide selection of actively managed funds.
ETF | Assets under management | Expense ratio |
---|---|---|
Invesco QQQ Trust (ticker: QQQ) | $244 billion | 0.2% |
VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) | $14 billion | 0.35% |
Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) | $19 billion | 0.09% |
Global X Uranium ETF (URA) | $3 billion | 0.69% |
The SPY ETF is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the performance of the S&P 500 index, which is a basket of the largest publicly traded companies in the U.S. SPY is the oldest ETF listed on a U.S. exchange and is one of the most popular ETFs in the world.
SPX Vs SPY Actual Cost
If you take contracts with the same parameters (same strike price, expiration date, etc.), buying an SPY option will be about 10 times cheaper than the SPX options. The reason for this is the nature of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust exchange traded fund.
Both SPY and SPX options are used primarily for those looking to invest in the S&P 500. The S&P 500 index contract tracks the 500 of the largest publicly-traded company in the United States. In most cases, traders with more capital lean towards using SPX options, while those with less tend to use SPY.
There are multiple ways (such as ETFs, mutual funds, options, futures and annuities) that are accessible for investors at all levels to invest in Nasdaq-100®.
Our recommendation for the best overall S&P 500 index fund is the Fidelity 500 Index Fund (FXAIX). With a 0.015% expense ratio, this fund is the cheapest one on our list. In addition, the fund does not have a minimum initial investment requirement, sales loads or trading fees.
First, VOO has a lower investment expense ratio compared to SPY. Also, while VOO and SPY have the same tax efficiencies when comparing their after-tax returns, VOO generates a lower tax burden than SPY across all time periods. Finally, VOO also outperformed SPY in both total returns and dividend yield.
The Bottom Line. Both index mutual funds and ETFs can provide investors with broad, diversified exposure to the stock market, making them good long-term investments suitable for most investors. ETFs may be more accessible and easier to trade for retail investors because they trade like shares of stock on exchanges.
Which mutual fund is better than S&P 500?
Fund | Seven-year return | One-year return |
---|---|---|
Wells Fargo Worldwide US All Cap Growth | 260% | 81.9% |
AXA Framlington American Growth | 260% | 42.8% |
Janus Henderson US Forty | 257% | 37.7% |
Alger The Alger American Asset Growth | 256% | 35.8% |
Mutual funds | 1-year return (%) |
---|---|
Axis Value Fund | 40.16 |
SBI Long Term Equity Fund | 40.00 |
HDFC Multi Cap Fund | 40.19 |
Kotak Multicap Fund | 39.77 |
The administrative costs of managing ETFs are commonly lower than those for mutual funds. ETFs keep their administrative and operational expenses down through market-based trading. Because ETFs are bought and sold on the open market, the sale of shares from one investor to another does not affect the fund.
The single biggest risk in ETFs is market risk. Like a mutual fund or a closed-end fund, ETFs are only an investment vehicle—a wrapper for their underlying investment.
Disadvantages include high fees, tax inefficiency, poor trade execution, and the potential for management abuses.
